Stuff we like

This is a collection of goodies and services that we like and have had the pleasure of using.

COBB ORIGINAL & GAS  LAND ROVER  BRS OFFROAD ACCESSORIES

OK this one is for the ouens…..dudes  wanna seriously impress the ladies, no I mean seriously? It’s easy peasy, cook your woman a chicken in the COBB, that’s it sorted, chicks dig it!!!

We have been using The COBB since it was first demonstrated at a show in 2000, in those days it was a bit of a Verimark kind of this, novel but was it really going to produce the goods? Well it did and many many 100’s of chickens later, it’s still going strong. But not just chickens, beef roast, pork roast, you name it, COBB does it.

We have recently upgraded to the all new and huge GAS COBB. On a recent overland expedition to Gonarezhou, Zimbabwe, we got to play with the new “toy”. It’s going to be a winner as well, you just need a bigger crowd to cook for as it will take a side of beef big enough for “the boys”.

Land_rover

This incredible brand has been responsible for taking us on many an overland adventure into Africa, we have used Mrs Custard (pic) in Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Mozambique and for the occasional soft core jaunt to Dullstroom! Mrs Custard is part of the family and apart for the occasional minor niggle, has never let us down. Our new addition to the Maplanga “family” is our green Defender 90, we call him “Snolly” and look forward to many great short adventures in the new edition to the team.

If you own a Land Rover, this is the company to outfit your wheels with all the “jewellery” required to ramp the car park pavements or embark on some serious adventure. BRS Overland have just kitted out “Snolly” and wow looking good! They are a Land Rover accredited company and this means all accessories can be sold and fitted with the approval of Land Rover South Africa.

ZIPPISAT  FISHING GEAR THE EVAN Braai starter.

Zippistat

When is a toy an essential or a nice to have? It’s essential if your in the middle of nowhere, have no cell phone reception and have an real emergency.

On a recent trip to Gonarezhou, Zimbabwe, we were given a Zippisat phone to test and play with. Though we did not have an emergency on this trip, we used the phone to make essential comms with our office and sms loved ones who just didn’t crack the nod for the trip etc. We also played with a satellite data connection and managed to run banking and check our emails on the rare occasions that we missed our “first world connectivity”.

The Zippisat brings you peace of mind, it works well, is light and easy to use, we highly recommend it, if you just have to be connected.

Stuff we like Mias

Mias in Fourways has a great selection of fishing equipment and it's where you will find me before a fishing trip to stock up up on lures and flies.

The Evan was “discovered” by us in Port Elizabeth many many years ago, it is THE quintessential braai starter. Take a trigger start plumber’s torch fire it up and apply to coals, firelighters, twigs etc. It just works and if you really want to, it make a cool cigarette lighter.

CADAC commercialised this device a couple of years ago but theirs was lousy. Just go out to your local hardware store and grab an “Evan”. Why Evan? Cos our uncle Evan conceptualised its outdoor use, simple as that!
