With this in mind we took up Air Zimbabwe’s kind offer to join them for the inaugural direct flight Johannesburg to Vic Falls to prove that you can catch many tiger in winter, if you use the right methods. Rod tubes in hand we checked in at the Air Zimbabwe counter in the new section at OR Tambo, 2 hrs later we arrived and enjoyed a wee bit of “pomp and ceremony” to celebrate this very important event. Air Zimbabwe now flies Jozi to Vic Falls direct on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and they hope to extend this schedule to a daily flight given time and of course demand as the destination regains it’s former glory. |

So off to Imbabala, this wonderful lodge is situated close to the Zimbabwe/Botswana border right on an unspoilt stretch of the Zambezi River, it is a game and bird viewing paradise and of course a not too shabby fishing destination. Many tigers were caught in between the great meals and a night game drive thanks to the insistence of Damesh (the Imbabala resident guide). Zambezi legend Ron White kindly offered to take us out fishing and we think we felt the slight air of cynicism, winter tiger fishing is not high on the activity list for river wise Zimbo’s, usually…. |

So what makes them bite? Now that would be telling but a trip to Mia’s in Fourways will help you build that arsenal needed to temp the tigers onto the hook. The water is clear so what you throw in front of them is important, they can be fussy eaters but when you carefully select the right lure or fly we have proven that a great days fishing can be had, and come to think of it, don’t we all eat more and tend to put on a bit of weight in winter. |

To end off the trip we were treated to a flip over Vic Falls in a helicopter, spectacular! It is one of the Seven Wonders of the World after all.
