Kafue National Park

Kafue is Zambia’s oldest and largest national park. In fact this vast park is the second biggest in the world with an area that is roughly the size of Wales.

Once a vibrant safari destination the park went through some dark days when poaching of all species was rampant. Since Wilderness Safaris has some into the park there has been a rejuvenated tourist climate and a hefty decline in poaching.

The northern section of the Kafue is the best known and most accessible and encompasses a variety of habitats. The Busanga Plains in the far north is a huge watery wilderness fed by a number of tributaries in the wet summer months that recedes to become vast grassland tracts dotted with pools of water in the dry winter months. These grasses attract huge herds of red lechwe and other plains game including  puku, Lichtenstein’s hartebeest and impala who in turn attract the predators.
